It is the pride and passion of Barry Proven who, surprisingly for an accountant, really ‘gets’ that some things in life are not about money. The grapes are grown on shallow red clay over limestone and the wines always show the influence of the sea. The salty air and chalky soils produce a Pinot Noir that is bright and crunchy with lifted aromatics and fine tannins. We have made delicious Pinot Noir with Barry’s grapes for many years, but this is our first single vineyard ‘Suma’.
"In '15, Ray Nadeson produced 4 single vineyard pinot noirs with identical winemaking, fascinating insight into the vineyard. The 50% whole-bunches didn't gel with Springbank but they do here. Heady aromatics of Middle Eastern spices, whole bunch freshness, medium-bodied, chalk-like tannins some grip and super sapid. In a word, delicious." 94 points, Jane Faulkner, James Halliday Wine Companion
