"A big spiel on the front label labours over the ‘Sideways effect’ and merlot. Always like reading Lethbridge’s labels. Anyway, it’s merlot from Geelong, which could be uneasy bedfellows, but has made for a charismatic child here.
Slinky, medium weight, succulent thing this is. Oak is present but finely meshed, indeed, this is an instructional video in how to use wood as seasoning, with layers of spice woven through the attractively soft sour plum fruit character in bouquet and palate. It’s a fine thrust of merlot here, elegant, willowy yet honed with fine tannin. Really, this is very good." 93+ points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
Story of the Wine: It is almost 10 yrs ago that the Miles in the film Sideways delivered his famous line — “I’m not drinking any f**king Merlot!” — this single line many believed was the catalyst for a market backlash against the variety. Just as the ABC crowd are coming back to Chardonnay the NFM crowd are returning to Merlot. All classic grape varieties are classic for a reason.
At Lethbridge, Merlot was amongst our original plantings in 1996 and our site has the soil and climate to produce elegant and structured Merlot. At Lethbridge we have always made Merlot with no compromise, low yields less than a ton/acre, barrels made by Jean Louis Bossuet and all the care and attention we can lavish. A wine we are very proud of.
