Mietta Hits New York

Published in Wine Written by Manager
every week we seem to get emails requesting wine for various events, tastings, shows etc and so about six weeks ago when Gordon Little from Little Peacock Imports and Eric Asimov from the New York Times asked us to send wine for a dinner at New York restaurant The Spotted Pig we thought it sounded like something a bit special.
The dinner was intended to showcase Australian red wines and to breakdown some of the stereotypes that exist, namely that Australia only produces big bold shiraz.
We were very excited last week when The New York Times published an article that featured the 12 favourite wines from this tasting and the 2008 Mietta Pinot Noir rates a mention. If you are interested to read article click on the link below.

Lethbridge @ Rootstock Sydney 2013

Published in Wine Events Written by Manager
Another busy weekend in Sydney with Wine judging at the Australasian Biodynamic and Organic Wineshow, followed by showcasing Lethbridge Wines at the inaugural Rootstock Wine Festival Sydney, an event the brought together over thirty artisan wineries from around the world, along with some of Australia's most interesting and unique farmers, producers, chefs, sommeliers, writers and thinkers as well as a hipster crowd who share common philosophies on sustainability and authenticity.
The event was a great success and an opportunity for both Ray and Alex to try some uber cool wines such as Guisseppe Renaldi's Barolo, Radikon from Fruili, an orange coloured skin contact Pinot Gris and a delicious Bobar Yarra Valley shiraz made using carbonic maceration.
Overall take home message was that there are some really interesting and delicious wines made using organic and biodynamic philosophies.

A Celebration of Pinot Noir

Published in Wine Events Written by Manager
Rays been in his element recently as an invited speaker at the Mornington Peninsula International Pinot Noir celebration, taking him back to his academic days. This bi-annual event should become a pilgrimage for pinot lovers across Australia. There was a stellar cast of international Pinot Noir producers including, Josh Jenssen, from Calera, Ted Lemon (Littori), Etienne Grivot (Vognes Romanee), Marquis Sauvage (Burn Cottage, Central Otago) as well as a few local stars.
There were some great wines presented and the stylistic differences between Victorian regions is becoming more apparent as winemakers have really begun to get in touch with and understand their individual terrior. Interestingly the savoury, tannins of Lethbridge, especially our Mietta looked more aligned with Burgundy than it did with either the NZ or Californian Pinot Noirs and although not necessarily the favourite with the crowd the MWs present seemed impressed.

Living Colour

Published in Winemaking Written by Manager
Vintage 2013 will be upon us very soon.  Veraison is well under way in the vineyards and we have been setting up bird scarers and preparing nets for the vines.  The first fruit will be coming in within the fortnight for sparkling wine and not long after for the other white varieties.  It's looking like another good vintage - touch wood.

Back to the Vineyard

Published in People & Wineries Written by Manager
After another successful new release launch on the weekend, with all of the new wines and new labels being very well received, it's time to get back to work in the vineyard.  There is a lot of growth with great spring conditions so we will be doing a lot of mowing and vine training over the coming months.  It looks like we will have another great vintage on the way.
