Campbell Mattinson review of 2010 Pinot Noir

Published in Wine Written by Manager

Lethbridge Pinot Noir 2010

Campbell Mattinson

2010 was a wetter, cooler vintage in southern Victoria and it did a lot of good for much of the local pinot noir. This one was cold soaked for ten days prior to wild yeast fermentation. It saw 30 percent whole bunches and 35 percent new oak. I liked this from the first sip. It’s tangy and refreshingly acidic but it has the flavour and tannin to support it. Earth, rhuburb, dark cherries, and sweet dry spices. Lots of grainy, sinewy dryness reaching out through the finish. Feels natural, balanced and long. Feels prickly and alive, in a good way. Drinks well now, though it will take kindly to some age too.

93 Points
Drink : 2014 – 2018

Mietta Pinot Noir starts veraison

Published in Winemaking Written by Manager
We have just seen the first signs of veraison in our vineyard with the Mietta and other blocks of Pinot Noir starting to change from green to red.  We have also used the irrigation in the last week for the first time in two years.  The vineyard looks great at the moment and all signs are pointing to 2012 being a great year in Geelong.

End of Year Lunch at Gladioli

Published in Restaurants & Wine Written by Manager
Last week we rewarded ourselves for another busy and eventful year with lunch at the brand new Gladioli Restaurant in Inverleigh.  We were very impressed with the restaurant that chef Matthew Dempsey has set up, in its first week of operation.  Along with a focus on local produce, there is also a nice wine list with plenty of local wines represented.  This is a great new addition to the region and we expect to be hearing a lot more about it as word gets around.

Back to the Vineyard

Published in People & Wineries Written by Manager
After a busy few weeks of events with our New Release Launch, Cutler & Co dinner, and Toast to the Coast we have gone back to the vineyard this week and it is looking great.  The early season growth has been phenomenal and all is looking good for vintage 2012 - touch wood - with plenty of moisture in the soil and some warm weather coming.  We are looking forward to spending some sunny days in the vineyard over the summer.

Hand Bottling the Mistelle

Published in Wine Written by Manager
Our Mistelle is made from unfermented white grape juice and aged brandy spirit which are blended and then left in barrels - outside - for six years.  This fortified wine is concentrated by evaporation and the flavours are integrated by the long maturation in oak.  We have just hand-bottled one barrel in 500mL bottles only available from the cellar door or at our New Release Launch.
